What Are Cis And Trans Organic Chemistry?
What Are Cis And Trans Organic Chemistry? The two most important topics in organic chemistry are polychemistry, and cis and trans. The issue is what is the most appropriate structure for compounds and how can one design a useful catalyst for a chemical reaction to occur? The answer to this is referred to as cis and trans organic chemistry.Cis refers to the monomer structure of the molecule and trans to the stereochemistry. An example would be C6H7O, which contains C, H, and O as individual monomers, while there is also a stereochemical configuration that exists, in which the carbon atoms are substituted with oxygen atoms. The compound is known as ethane or propane, for which the stereochemical configuration is the specific one. With cis and trans organic chemistry, the terms are used as modifiers to their respective structures. Trans monomer is the mono-substance that is made up of two single-substances, such as an amino acid. Cis monomer is a mono-substance that has two single-substan ces as its constituent molecules. In C6H7O, the C represents the C6 monomer, and the H represents the H2 monomer. With the use of these terms, we can already show that both cis and trans are not simply mutations of one monomer, but both are two different monomers that are joined together through either trans or cis chemistry. And, this duality could only exist if the two structures were either the sum of two single-substances, or if they were the double sum of two single-substances. It is difficult to find a single-substance that could allow all three. As for how the stereochemistry is used with cis and trans organic chemistry, let us take for example the former. The C of the C6 monomer is substituted with O, while the H of the H2 monomer is substituted with oxygen. This would create a stable compound, which would mean that either the O could be substituted with another molecule in any of the three possible orientations, creating an oxy-H compound. In C6H7O, however, the C is not repl aced with oxygen, and the compound would be a stable molecule, allowing it to undergo oxidation by means of oxygen molecules. The reaction for this compound would be something along the lines of reducing the compound into a simpler molecule, which is a stable compound. The structure, based on the stereochemistry, would be cis-O, cis-OH, which was then further reduced to the simple compound. The same would apply to the cis-O, cis-OH transition of ethane, propane, and butane. And, cis and trans organic chemistry allow one to realize their vision for a stable compound. It can be reacted with two hydrocarbons or ethanolamine, resulting in the formation of a product known as tert-butyl ether. In other examples, such as benzene, pentane, and ethylene, we can see that this chemical can be reacted with similar compounds in order to end up with compounds that have varying structures, depending on the two starting compounds.Cis and trans are much easier to grasp than the Gegenbekennung which is an interaction between two electrons. Trans and cis are used in organic chemistry with so many properties that have proven to be effective in solving a wide variety of organic reactions, such as carbon dioxide reduction and carbon bond breaks.

The Best in Parallel Text Books Online 8 Refined Resources
The Best in Parallel Text Books Online 8 Refined Resources The Best in Parallel Text Books Online: 8 Refined Resources Lets say youre in a place where you cant read the local language. You cant read any stickers, pamphlets, slogans or warning signs in that language.Only there are signs in both English and the primary spoken language, so you can still understand everything. This scenario is a reality in many countries and regions, which means you can use the English as a backup while you work with your budding skills in the other language. Its not a bad way to learn.Wouldnt it be great if you could also work with longer texts like articles, stories and whole books like this?Well, you can.Not only are parallel texts helpful for travelers, but they can be used as an integral part of acquiring a foreign language. And you can find entire books full of them.In this post, were going to look at why you should use parallel texts to teach yourself a language. Then, were going to look at some great places where you can find parallel texts in book form. A New Way to Read? Features and Benefits of Parallel Text Bo oksFirst, lets look at exactly what parallel texts for learners look like.Parallel text books often place one language meant to be familiar to the reader (like English) on one page and the target language on the other side. This is often whats meant when parallel texts are mentioned. Another, less common type of parallel or dual text comes in the form of interlinear books, which show a translation of the line youre reading directly underneath it.Both of these types of texts allow you to get a sense of big-picture comprehension without translating in your head. There are multiple ways that people use parallel texts to learn languages. Really, all of them are helpful, and each person just has to come up with their own technique, but well discuss some specific ideas below to get you started.Using these techniques can help you learn the language faster and retain it more by developing mental connections with what youre reading. The most common way to use these texts is to only use your native language when its absolutely necessary for understanding whats going on in the text. This keeps you from just leaning on a language you already know.By only consulting the teaching language when absolutely necessary, you get the experience of extensive reading without the pain of having to do it in the normal way. This also means that all the input youre getting is comprehensible, which helps grow your vocabulary, grammar and other subtle aspects of the language. In the end, the goal of the parallel text books is to help you understand and learn at the same time by helping you when you need it and not helping you when you dont need it.If you can learn to use parallel text books correctly, theyre incredibly powerful tools that can teach you a very nuanced version of the language youre trying to learn. How to Use Parallel Text BooksTo make the most of using parallel text books, follow these steps.1. Dont read both languages all the time. This is the most important step on this lis t. Dont read both languages every time you readâ"your native language is just an aid for understanding the target language and should be treated as such.If you start reading both languages all the time, youre basically giving your brain the green light to always translate in your head. This is very important not to do because translating in your head is tiresome and only slows you down and keeps you from sounding natural when you speak.2. Read often.Reading in a new language is just like learning to read again. You need to be reading as much as possible so you can grow as much as possible. Take in as many different types of books as you can and read them until you can digest and retain the information in them. Not only is reading often important to get used to the method of reading parallel texts, but it also just gets you comfortable around your new language and helps you begin to think in that language when youre using it.Essentially, the more you read, the better youll speak, read and write in the language that youre studying.3. Read out loud whenever possible. This will probably make you uncomfortable at first, because most of us dont regularly read out loud. However, its very important to read books out loud when youre reading in a foreign language because it solidifies the information and grammar and helps you with things like pronunciation, rhythm, tone, etc. Especially if you combine this activity with listening to native speakers read the same book that youre reading.4. Dont just read. While reading is definitely one of the best ways to pump up your language skills, you cant let other skills, like listening, go neglected. One easy way to engage in multiple ways of interacting with a language on a daily basis is with FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videosâ"like movie trailers, music videos, news and inspiring talksâ"and turns them into personalized language lessons. Read interesting books. If you do a quick Google search for books in your target language, probably what comes up are some textbooks to learn the language and some graded readers. While graded readers and childrens books are a great way to learn the basics of a language, good, full-length parallel text books with interesting stories are a far better way of practicing, getting better at real speech and learning the ins-and-outs of the language like a native. So where do you find these good books? A Student Review of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
A Student Review of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Alexandra graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011 with her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She is now a Chicago tutor specializing in many subjects, such as Algebra tutoring, Arithmetic tutoring, Geometry tutoring, and much more. See what she had to say as she reflected on her time at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Alexandra:I went to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign/Urbana. The campus has great transportation options (lots of buses), and parking was not totally unreasonable either. The area is pretty rural, but it is a college town, so the population doubles during the school year. There is a pretty good mall, and a lot to do on campus and in the surrounding area. A lot of people bike, and there are bike paths all over campus, but campus is small enough that you can walk everywhere too. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Alexandra:The majority of the teachers that I had were wonderful. I began college with a pre-veterinary medicine track, so I had a lot of science classes. Those classes were often called weed out classes. There were a lot of students in those, and there was very little help given unless you made a lot of effort to seek it out. But as you get more involved in your major and the classes get smaller, the teachers are clearly invested in your success. They were always willing to help and very understanding of extenuating circumstances. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Alexandra:I lived in the dorms for four years. That is unusual, but I loved the dorms. They were very social, and each dorm had its own cafeteria. I ate dinner with a group of 12 really close friends. There is a real sense of community. There are a lot of people, but it is easy to build a neighborhood. A wide variety of room types exist, from singles to quads. I stayed in all-female housing, but most dorms are co-educational. My dorm was very clean and comfortable. Some are not, but most are nice, especially since they have recently updated most of them. You just have to do your research to determine what kind of dorm situation you want. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Alexandra:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has top Business and Engineering programs. There are a lot of people from both departments at the school. I knew a lot of people in the Music program, as well. It is a very small program, but everyone spoke very positively about how great the instructors were. I was in the Education program, and I believed it to be excellent. Teachers were very dedicated to staying informed of research-based practices, as well as the latest studies in the field. Most of my professors were published and very distinguished. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Alexandra:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has the most Greek organizations of any college in the United States. So, Greek life plays a huge role in the culture there. I was in a professional sorority, but that is not where I met most of my friends. I found it very easy to meet people. There are hundreds of student organizations, and that is where I met most of my friends. The dorms are also very social, and there is a lot of emphasis (in most dorms) on creating social and supportive environments. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Alexandra:I never used the Career Center on campus, and my field is not one that is often recruited. There are a few job fairs every year, organized by industry. I had a job when I graduated, so I did not attend any of these fairs, but most of my friends went to them, and they said they were helpful. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Alexandra:Each dorm has its own small library and computer lab, so those are very easy to get to. There is also a large main library that has multiple buildings. Each college has a library, as well, so there are great areas to study all over campus, with just about every resource you could want. You can also request books online and they can be sent to your dorm library, so you do not even have to search for them! The library system at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is really excellent. The student union offers a lot of activities, which, while a little dorky, were actually pretty funand a great way to meet friends. I never felt things were overly crowded, despite the fact that University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has so many students. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Alexandra:There is a huge mall that we went to rather frequently. There are also downtown areas in Champaign and Urbana that have a lot of fun restaurants and shops. There is one main street on campus that has a lot of restaurants that are good for a college student budget, and there is a lot to do. The surrounding area has a lot of farms, which provide a ton of activities for the fall. I would say most students do not leave campus more than once or twice a weekperhaps more if they have a car. The bus system works pretty wellit goes to the downtown areas and the mall, but it was not really necessary to leave campus most of the time. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Alexandra:There were 40,000 undergraduate students when I was there. My class sizes varied from 10 people to 500, depending on the class. I did not hate the large classes because they provided many opportunities to meet people and develop study groups, etc. The small classes were also nice because it meant a lot of teacher attention, as well as help if you needed it. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Alexandra: I had one class that I loved with a teacher who was clearly knowledgeable and adored his subject. He taught animal science classes, but his area of expertise was sheep. While working with him, I learned to love sheep too, and I seriously considered going into that field (something I never would have considered before his class). He really taught me the infectiousness of one person's passions, and he helped me develop some of my own teaching philosophies. I learned from him that if I love what I am teaching, chances are my students will too. Check out Alexandras tutoring profile. Superprof has plenty of tutors all across the country and online that can help you reach your language goals.Do a little research to ensure you're picking a good tutor. Make sure the tutor has the requirements you need to reach your goals. You need to feel comfortable with your tutor. Learning a new language can be daunting so you want to have a tutor who will encourage you and who you feel is invested in your learning. Speaking Dutch requires confidence and you should be able to draw confidence from your tutor and not feel shy in front of them. Finding the right tutor for you is just as much about your gut feeling a bout them as it is their qualifications.Don't hesitate to ask to meet your tutor, or arrange a Skype call, before you commit to lessons with them. If you connect with them and you feel at ease then this is just as important as their experience! While you will learn a lot in both group lessons and private tutoring you can't just rely on your teacher for learning. You have to put in extra work yourself between your lessons. There are many things you can do to boost your skills.Planning your revision between your lessons is essential (Source: Pexels)Plan Your RevisionThe first step is to know whatâs ahead of you. What do you need to cover?Ask your tutor or teacher for a brief outline of what you're going to cover in class. You can use your timetable to keep on top of revision between classes so you're you really know the topic or grammar rule before you move on to the next one.Taking notes in class and from your textbook (or worksheets, if your teacher uses them) is crucial. The acti on of making notes itself is a way of learning and remembering, no one can take information in just from staring at a page.Immerse YourselfListen and watch as much authentic content as you can. You need to immerse yourself in the language you are learning. Books, TV, YouTube, radio and subtitled films can all help.Reading helps you revisit learned vocabulary, and see those words in new sentences and contexts. One excellent source of foreign language exposure is through graded readers, which are designed specifically for language learners of different levels. Another good source is advertisements or menus, which tend to use short, colloquial text.Train your ear listening to Dutch radio and watching Dutch TV and Film. This is a great technique for comprehension. At the beginning of learning a language you feel like you should know every word but the more you listen to Dutch the more you'll be able to pick out keywords in a sentence so you can understand. As you listen you'll hear how they are using certain words or how they formulate sentences. It's good practice to note down words that come up often. These are usually connecting words or useful verbs that you can work in to your own speech.Get HelpAsk friends and family to test you. Get them to shout out a verb and you can conjugate it. Or they can test you on vocabulary or different tenses.Speak to fellow learners to test each other on what you've learnt in class. This is also a great tool to hear someone else explain a grammar rule to you. If you didn't understand it in class you might find it easier when someone else explains it in their own words. If you can, speak to a native Dutch speaker. There are plenty of language exchange websites where you can chat in English and Dutch to share your knowledge with each other. You might even find an exchange in person. This is an invaluable tool in language learning. You'll hear someone other than your teacher talking so you can get used to a new accent and to differen t vocabulary.Speaking to a native will also boost your confidence knowing that you can have conversations in Dutch and can even make a friend in Dutch!Online ResourcesIf youâre struggling with revision and need another method other than using your textbook, you can use online resources to boost your learning between lessons.DuolingoDuolingo is a language learning website and App for mobiles and tablets. ESOL Online Understanding Verb Tenses
ESOL Online Understanding Verb Tenses Daily ESOL Courses for Learning English: Marking Time with Tenses ChaptersBefore Delving into the TopicDoing it Like Other TonguesWhy Time Descriptions Are Not Needed in EnglishGetting Back to That DebateSome languages around the globe do not require verb tenses to show when an action happens. Nor do they demand a different verb form for each specific pronoun.Afrikaans, Scandinavian languages and Mandarin Chinese are just a few languages whose verbs do not change form, either in conjugation or for any tenses. Is your native language among those whose verb forms don't change, no matter the subject or the time the action occurred? If so, the need to constantly alter the verb when speaking and writing English must be bewildering, especially because there are several ways to mark time in the English language. We'd like to explore them with you.Time descriptors are not necessarily needed in English Source: Pixabay Credit GeraltRegardless of any possible ulterior motive, the one teaching English to you is absolutely correct: language nuance exists within t he context of what is written or being said. The information you can find through context includes when actions happen, and the general tone or mood of the piece. We will discuss mood in our next section. Verb tenses are the best indicators of time in the English language.Consider the three simple tenses: past, present and future. Using one or the other to describe when an action happens provides the reader/listener with enough information to determine the timing of the action or event.Perhaps that is why so many people who are learning English as a foreign language content themselves with using only the three simple tenses. However, verb tenses go further to give a broader picture - more context. The progressive tenses indicate something currently happening (until the action was interrupted). The continuous tenses signal something ongoingThe perfect-progressive tenses give emphasis on the result of an action.Verb tenses help the speaker/listener give actions definitive time frames. Set ting the MoodIn English, verb constructions can be used to set a mood â" a tone that gives further meaning to a sentence or paragraph. There are a total of five moods, but here, we focus on only one: the subjunctive mood. This type of phrasing is usually found in more formal English constructions. You might have read a sentence like this:To gain fluency in the language, it is recommended that the English learner practise speaking skills daily. Subjunctive mood uses: a dependent clause + passive voice + conjunction + independent clause (with modified verb, to suit the mood)Typically used verbs for this construction include: suggest, demand, insist, recommend, and ask.Can you write a subjunctive mood sentence?Learn more about English Grammar Clauses in our dedicated blog.A Note on Passive VoiceSubjunctive mood sentences include the use of a passive voice clause, as shown above. What is meant by passive voice? This sentence construction puts the focus of the phrase on the object, rather than on the subject.Today's English lesson was taught by Mr. Smith â" passive voice.Standard English sentences call for focus on the subject, like so:Mr. Smith taught today's English lesson.Active voice is a much more direct way â" the recommended way to express oneself in English. We will discuss passive voice in depth in our next Daily Dose of English Learning article.Getting Back to That DebateEarlier in this article, we mentioned that grammaticians of British and American English are hotly debating whether verbs in English actually use any tenses at all.The general consensus seems to be that English only uses two tenses: past and present.English linguists are hotly debating whether the English language has verb tenses Source: Pixabay Credit: GeraltIn fact, that agreement extends to the belief that fewer than half of the world's languages actually use clearly defined tenses, as opposed to aspects. What does that matter to you, who is taking English courses in London? Not much, o ther than you will most likely have to recognize and identify verb tenses on any English test you take.Developing your English skills should be less a matter of books and theory, and more a proposition of speaking the language as much and as often as possible. Although an understanding of English grammar is most certainly important, it is not necessary to know every single aspect and rule in order to speak everyday English. In fact, the more you speak, the more the language constructs will naturally come to you, with no special effort on your part.To truly improve your English, we suggest that you focus on your English pronunciation and vocabulary, learn to use English words in proper context, develop strong writing skills and overall literacy, in addition to your grammar lessons. What mood is that sentence written in?If you don't have time to take face to face lessons you can also learn English online with a tutor.
How to Follow Up With Networking Contacts (Without Being Annoying) - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to Follow Up With Networking Contacts (Without Being Annoying) - Introvert Whisperer How to Follow Up With Networking Contacts (Without Being Annoying) Career Attraction August 18, 2014 Communication, Networking No responses How to Follow Up With Networking Contacts (Without Being Annoying) You just made a great connection at a networking event. You feel that âburden to meet someoneâ lift from your shoulders and decide to relax with a drink at the bar. On your way over, you realize: I have no reason to contact this person again. How am I going to follow up? Donât panic. You can still save the connection and build a solid relationship with a series of âlight touches.â This helps you to stay in someoneâs mind without (literally) being in their face. Here are a few touch points to try: They mentioned an upcoming work event, client meeting, training, conference, workshop or other events send an email asking how the event went. Their alma mater or favorite sports team won an important game congratulate them. They have an upcoming vacation or staycation or are in the process of choosing a vacation destination send a recommendation or a link to an article you found on the destination. They are battling an illness or aiding a sick parent, spouse, friend or child check-in and send wishes for a speedy recovery. They have a new baby or a baby on the way, or found out if they were having a boy or a girl congratulate them and offer some nice memories of your own if youâre a parent. Be careful with the advice here â" they are getting a lot of it. It is their birthday or a childâs birthday, or theyâre attending or throwing a birthday party ask how it went. What to Do When You Donât Know That Much Forgot to jot down the details of your conversation? Here are some additional follow-ups to effectively (but not annoyingly) stay on someoneâs radar: Create connections for the person by introducing them to a vendor who can help them or to a potential client. Invite them to or let them know about upcoming events they might enjoy or benefit from. Send your regards through a mutual friend. Congratulate them (on a job promotion, securing a new client, etc). By the way, an easy way to stay on top of news regarding your contacts is a service called Newsle. Newsle sends you a message whenever someone you have set up an alert for is mentioned in the press. Keeping Up With the Details Before we leave this topic, I want to quickly touch upon one final thing: how to keep track of your contactsâ details. One trick I use is that after I have had a conversation with someone, I quickly jot down a few key points from the conversation on the back of their business card (if Iâm at an event) or in a notebook if I met the person for lunch or at a meeting. Then, I transfer these notes to their âcontactâ record on my computer when I get back to my office. How have you learned to keep in touch with your network? Share your tips in the comments!
